Tea
Tea is a drink made by
infusing leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis, or Thea sinensis) in hot
water. Tea has been an item of trade and tribute for at least three
thousand years. At first it was food and medicine, and then a tonic of sorts
before becoming a beverage.
Tea became a
drink over centuries, spread from China ’s interior down the length of the
Yang-tse River to the Yellow Sea . Lu Yu completed 'The Book of Tea' about the Chinese Year
3458, or 760 AD. The word for tea in most of mainland
China (and also in
Japan ) is 'cha'.
Some of the
finest Oolongs in the world now are grown in Taiwan .
Japan also produces a considerable
amount of green tea, most of which is consumed
domestically.
Tea's physical and mental
health benfits have been touted for centuries. These benefits are
now finally being taken seriously seriously. Several notable journals have
recently published studies that support the ealy claims of Chinese
hebalists of the benefit of green and puer tea for the imune
sytem, and control of blood pressure and cholesterol.
